Google released many new watch faces for it’s Android Wear operating system in a move surely aimed at Apple. Just over a week ago Apple announced three new watch faces for it’s widely successful Apple Watch at their annual WWDC conference and Google has shot back with a staggering 17 new faces that will join it’s already massive collection of over 1,500 watch faces available for download on the Play Store.
While Apple Watch owners will have to wait until WatchOS 2.0 comes out later this year to get their new watch faces Googles are available now and include designer watch faces from the likes of Bang & Olufsen and Cynthia Rowley. Others include more novel faces such as a Gundam face and one from the popular Angry Birds mobile games.
It seems wearables has become the new battlefield between the two tech giants as each take turn upping the ante in the form of new apps and customization. A smart move by Apple might be to open the gate and let 3rd party developers design their own watch face apps but as of now it’s strictly prohibited. Apple may play to monetize the demand and create another revenue stream but that certainly limits the sheer number of options that no doubt interest potential buyers of each device.
